Milan is the place to get a head start on Christmas. Come early November the city's shopping is at its best to actually use: the glass-domed Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, the flagship boutiques of the Quadrilatero della Moda and the eight floors of La Rinascente are all open and stocked for the festive season, but blissfully un-mobbed compared to December. Fly out Friday night, give Saturday to the sights - the Duomo, the Galleria and a wander down to the Navigli canals - then spend Sunday on a Christmas-shopping run to the Fidenza Village designer outlet before an evening flight home. Be straight about one thing: the famous Christmas markets and the headline light displays don't switch on until December - this is the calm, get-ahead trip, not the markets one.

The weekend, hour by hour
Friday night
- Land at Milan Malpensa (MXP) at 23:00; take a night bus to Milano Centrale (~€10pp, ~50 min) - the last train is a gamble this late.
- Hop the M2 metro or a short taxi over to Cadorna Luxury Hotel by Cadorna station, check in and call it a night.
Saturday - the sights
- Start early at the Duomo before the crowds; climb to the rooftop terraces and walk among the spires.
- Wander the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II for the glass dome, the flagship windows of the Quadrilatero and La Rinascente by the Duomo - the fashion district to admire before you buy at the outlet tomorrow. Grab a panzerotto at Luini.
- Spend the afternoon in Brera - the Pinacoteca, cobbled lanes and design studios - then down to the Navigli canals.
- Aperitivo on the Navigli, then dinner at Masuelli San Marco or Ratanà (book ahead).
Sunday - the outlet
- Out early: a ~1-hour train from Milano Centrale to Fidenza, then the short shuttle to Fidenza Village (The Bicester Collection) - designer labels at outlet prices, made for the Christmas list.
- Shop the boutiques, then a proper Emilian lunch a short hop away at Trattoria Dai Sibani (4.3, open Sunday) - torta fritta, salumi and handmade tortelli, not the food court.
- Leave Fidenza by early afternoon (around 14:30); train back to Milan and straight onto the Malpensa Express for the 19:15 flight home - Christmas sorted.

A modern, central hotel right by Cadorna station - which matters here: the direct Malpensa Express to the airport runs from the platform 50 yards away. The Duomo and the Galleria are about a 15-minute walk, with Sforza Castle and Brera even closer. Two nights in a double, Friday to Sunday.
Weather & what to pack
November is one of Milan's greyest, wettest months: frequent low cloud, Po Valley fog (nebbia) and a real chance of drizzle, with short days (about 9-10 hours of daylight, dark by 5pm). The upside is shoulder-season calm - thinner crowds and easier tables before the December rush.
What to wear: A properly waterproof coat and a compact umbrella are essential, plus comfortable waterproof shoes for wet cobbles in Brera and along the Navigli. Add warm layers, a scarf and gloves for the cold, foggy evenings.
